Field No. 15 Peat Free Vegetable Planting Topsoil
What is it?
Field No.15 Vegetable Planting Topsoil is a nutrient rich blend of sandy loam, composted bark fines and soil improver.
What does it do?
Field No.15 is ideal for re-potting and feeding of vegetable plants, mature foliage and shrubs in raised beds or containers either outdoors or indoors.
Benefits include:
- It has a low bulk density which aids drainage and encourages the establishment of plant roots.
- It contains a high level of organic matter that will help hold nutrients more effectively in the root zone.
- It contains a balanced level of major nutrients and trace elements that will naturally encourage plant growth.
- It has a high water retaining capacity, reducing the requirement for irrigation.
How do you use it?
For use in raised beds simply fill the bed with the Field No.15 vegetable planting topsoil, then transplant young plants from the greenhouse. Once the raised bed is planted it is beneficial to apply a mulch such as Field No.8 Ornamental Bark Mulch or Field No.12 Nutrimulch around the plants to a depth of 75-100mm.
For direct seed sowing use Field No.23 Professional Potting Blend to create drills in the surface of the Field No.15.
For use in pots follow these simple steps:
- Ensure the pot can drain excess water through the base. It is often beneficial to introduce some “crocks” or broken polystyrene to serve this purpose.
- Remove the plant from its current pot and gently tease out the roots.
- Fill the base of the pot/container/raised bed with the Field No.15 so that the top of the root ball sits just below the top of the pot/container.
- Fill the area around the plant with Field No.15, firming it in as you go to eliminate air pockets.
- Water in according to the weather conditions. If planted indoors or in a pot standing on a hard area make sure there is an adequate drip tray/saucer to collect excess water.
- Once planted in a pot it is a good idea to apply a mulch product such as the Field No. 11 Pine Pot Mulch to depth of about 15mm. This will help hold moisture in the pot/container, suppress the growth of weeds and liverworts, plus provide an aesthetically pleasing finish.

I found this compost fine if spread as top layer on soil for veg growing. I thought it was sold as suitable for flowers etc so used it in pots and a herb planter. Results were mixed but generally not good as the compost became very hard. It was better mixed half/half with used compost to lighten it.

Second order, but definitely won’t be my last. I recently ordered 10 bags of No 15 vegetable planting topsoil to top up my raised veg beds and was delighted with the speedy service; the person who delivered the bags was polite and very helpful, a great ambassador for your company. We opened our garden to the public along with others in the village in 2022 and I was happy to tell anyone who enquired that the veg beds were full of No 15 (and where to get it!). I can say no more than I will be back before too long.

Top quality product, good service. We got bulk delivery of soil improver and bark. Bags delivered on pallets so where the pallets can go is limited. No hydraulic delivery just a pallet lifter. Would recommend Field Compost for bulk delivery.

Not yet tested I haven’t had the opportunity to plant anything yet, because of this I can’t comment on it as a growth medium. Comparing the product to other bulk composts it would appear to have a rich organic structure and good moisture retention without getting too wet. A good consistency with no obvious signs of contamination, stones, plastic or wood. Ordering and delivery were excellent, would recommend.

The soil and mulch is so nice to work with and I feel like I’m giving my plants and veg the best and it’s peat free. Great product… The soil blends from Field Compost are excellent products. I have received multiple orders and I literally love this stuff. The consistency of the soil, the warmth from the bag and the aroma give me great confidence of how well my vegetables will grow. I love this stuff! I teach gardening at a primary school, and I’ve had my own allotment for thirteen years, and I’ve never come across soil as lovely as this. The texture is just perfect, far better than anything you can buy at a garden centre, and it’s so nutritious the school garden is thriving on it!

I had a couple of phone conversations which were very friendly and helpful. Also emails to keep me up to date with delivery. Brilliant service and lovely compost. Field Compost were brilliant, they called me back within minutes of my web request, my veg compost was booked and delivered within days. It is fantastic, I can’t be more happy, my 3 raised beds are full and growing superbly, so far (nearly 2 months) I have not had to weed them. the moisture retention is also excellent. We only used the last few barrowful’s for the tomato planters at the weekend. I cannot be more pleased and will be going back for some topsoil for the flower border very soon.

I am pleased with this product. I have converted my vegetable plots to raised boxes this year and have used two 1000litre bags to fill them. It is quite a learning curve but on the whole things are growing well. Best radish crop I have ever had. Even tricky things like parsnips are thriving. Things that are not doing so well are the result of too much rain rather than a failure with the product. I have also had 1500 litres of bark and am delighted with that too. Excellent delivery arrangements and good service.

Highly recommend. First time I have used this company and I would definitely recommend the veg top soil , it is excellent quality. Will buy from them again without hesitation . Delivery was efficient and the chap was very friendly. When I placed the online order it stated I would get a confirmation mail through with a delivery time, unfortunately the mail only came through an hour after the delivery had arrived so if you need a specific time slot, maybe phone them to confirm on the day.

Fabulous soil. This is the first time that I have used this company but it won’t be the last. I am extremely impressed with the veg soil I ordered, fresh that day and a rich dark colour. I have used it to fill my raised veg beds. Delivery was prompt, although I didn’t get a call or notification until an hour after they delivered, so that may be an issue if you want the soil placed in a Specific location, luckily I was at home when it was delivered. I would totally recommend buying from field compost.

Great product & quick delivery. Have purchase top soil from Travis Perkins before and the quality and quantity of this product is far superior. Only negative is that it arrives on a pallet and you then have to wheelbarrow the soul to the location you need it. But this is very clear on the purchase instructions. Excellent quality top soil, far more economical than the small bags from the garden centre. This is the second order we’ve made with Chris (Mister Compost) so I guess that says a lot. He quickly followed up our order with a call to check on the delivery and talk us through the options, even advised us on how much soil conditioner we needed vs. topsoil for our conditions. He certainly knows his subject. Orders are sent out/confirmed on wednesdays (the day we ordered) so we even got delivery on the Friday. The soil arrives via a very large lorry, on palettes, a ton of soil in each bag. The soil conditioner they sell, is very fine with a very low peat content. This will help break up heavy clay soils. The topsoil has a higher peat content, more particulates. We used a layer of 2-3 inches of each. Buying this way is definitely more economical than small bags from the garden centre. I read several reviews of providers before ordering, as quality was my main concern. I can definitely confirm the quality of the soil from Mister Compost, we’ve been very happy. Fair amount of work but plants and lawn are loving it.
