Field No.1 – Organic Soil Improver
What is it?
High quality composted soil improver carefully graded to less than 8mm. Manufactured to BSI PAS100 (2018) from composted organic material. Contains more organic matter than manure or spent mushroom compost.
What does it do?
Quickly improves the quality of soil via the introduction of valuable organic matter and important plant nutrients.
Benefits include:
- Field No.1 can be used as a mulch that provides an insulating “blanket” for the soil that will suppress weeds whilst protecting plants and bulbs from frost and severe weather conditions.
- Field No.1 will stimulate the eco-system in the soil. The increased worm activity will quite literally dig this valuable source of organic matter into the soil for you.
- Field No.1 supplies plenty of potash which is nature’s answer to anti-freeze for plants.
- Field No.1 naturally releases balanced levels of phosphate that will help stimulate root growth.
- Field No.1 slowly releases nitrogen as the soil warms up helping to bring your garden back to life in the spring.
- Field No.1 contains an abundance of humic acid that holds nutrients in the plant rootzone for longer.
- Field No.1 will encourage beneficial microorganisms in the soil that improve plants resistance to disease.
How do you use it?
Spread evenly over bare soil to a depth of 10 cm; then for best results dig in with a spade or a fork; or leave it for the worms to do the hard work for you over a longer period of time.
Remember Field 1 should always be mixed with soil before planting.

I have used Field No.1 a couple of times and it has certainly improved the heavy clay soil and drainage is much better so is planting. I haven't even dug the product into the soil, I spread it in early autumn and left it over a few months until early spring and noticed a significant difference in the soil structure. The product and service is excellent. I am due to order the Filed No.12 in early spring to spread it over the Field No.1 which I just spread over. Thank you Field Compost for wonderful products.

5 Gold Star Service. The products are excellent and I think we have had all forms of compost from you to date and in very large quantities. But the reason I am giving a 5 star review is because of the delivery service. We have a very difficult site to access – up a narrow lane, double gates have to be cleared and our BT cable hangs in just the right place to be snagged by the fork lift. Your delivery people take such care and get it right even though it takes many attempts. Other firms’ delivery drivers just dump the dumpy bags in the lane and drive off. I would never use any other firm for compost because of the excellent product and the fantastic delivery service.

Delivered within a few days, and unloaded over a fence to exactly the right spot. Field Soil Improver is so easy to spread, very light, I just bucketed it out of the dumpy bag. No need to use a trowel. Took about 20 minutes to spread 400 litres. Delivery guys were v helpful and friendly.

Economic and eco-friendly, recycled product. In our garden landscaping project, this has enabled reuse of existing topsoil, rather than carting off even more soil, and importing new topsoil. 1500 litre Jumbo bag was not difficult to dig out, as the product is light and does not hold much water. Quite dusty though. Needs turning in promptly so it does not blow about in a wind.

I used the Organic Soil Improver for the first time in 2021 in some new raised beds on a new allotment site, I was so pleased with the results that I ordered another 1500L bag for 2022 to add to the existing beds and also make some new ones. Our yields of all vegetables have been really excellent. The soil on our site is heavy clay and prone to waterlogging, I have not mixed the soil improver with the soil as recommended. Vegetables were mostly transplanted into the beds, but I found that seeds of parsnip and carrot germinated and grew perfectly well when sown directly into the top layer of soil improver.

I have given the product this score because it appears to be of very good quality, and it spread very easily. However, the compost was sent on a heavy goods vehicle, which was extremely difficult to manoeuvre into my drive. It if wasn’t for the co-operation of my neighbour, who allowed the vehicle right up to his front window, it would have been impossible. As there is plenty of space for large supermarket lorries, for example to come in easily, I think the size of your vehicle would pose a problem in a number of locations.

Great product and great service In the last couple of months I’ve ordered topsoil and soil conditioner for two projects at opposite sides of my rear garden but similar in size and shape. This was in preparation for shrub planting. The products were both of excellent quality and in fact were commented on by a very experienced plantsman from the north easts leading garden centre. The comments were given whilst delivering my shrubs which he later planted. These products together with my hard work in preparing the ground resulted in an excellent quality soil. The top soil ordered was just to compensate for the turf removed but it blended in very well and had no stones or debris. The products were delivered in good time each time they were ordered. Contact with the company was easy (no hanging on) so I am very impressed with the products and service of this company.

I have to mention the heat being emitted from the soil improver in the bag, it was literally warm to the the touch and almost smouldering. Excellent service and a great product. Living on heathland I have been using soil improver for a number of years, but quality from a variety of providers has been very mixed. I have been looking for a really rich, well graded product with plenty of organic matter and was really thrilled when the delivery from Field Compost arrived. The power of Organic Soil Improver. It is just a few weeks since I took delivery of Field Compost Ltd, Organic Soil Improver. I have a piece of garden at the front of my home that is very sandy and nothing was growing successfully in it. I stripped out the old planting and put in a bag and a half of the improver. So far, so good…. Looks to be a very good product: nice and dark, well rotted and not at all unpleasant to handle. We ordered a bulk bag and it was lovely and warm just a few inches down, so the microbes were clearly doing their bit. We have very stony soil which we dug out out and replaced with the Soil Improver and organic compost mixed together. Only time will tell how well the plants grow but first signs are promising. We were unavoidably out when the delivery was made but the driver put the pallet exactly where I had asked and Chris from the office phoned to check all was OK. Good experience from start to finish and I would definitely use Field Compost again if I need to.

The improvement in our heavy clay soil is so very obvious and so, of course, is the effect on everything we grow. Field Compost Company was very easy to deal with and good communicators. Very accommodating with timing of delivery and very accurate in depositing the load in exactly the right place. The compost itself was of fine, even consistency, no plastic bits, and easy to handle. It was on the dry side, but that was much better than being very wet. I can’t give it five stars until I see the results on plant growth later in the season. I expect it has more value as a weed suppressor and improver of soil structure than in nutrient boost – which is just what I wanted.
