Ernie likes to take a relaxed approach to work. His main interests are taking naps, food and food.
As managing director, Chris’ role focusses on business strategy, administration, and representing us at shows, talks, and events. Chris’ hobbies include watching football (more specifically Spurs), golf, cricket… really any sport on the TV! He also enjoys taking his vintage tractor on a toddle to the village pub, or to longer tractor run events.
As company secretary and accounts, Joanna keeps track and manages the money going in and out, whether that’s invoices, wages, online payments or proformas. Jo enjoys painting and drawing and taking our company chairman (Ernie) on walks. To her husband Chris’ dismay, Jo is an avid Arsenal supporter.
Ben is our technical advisor; he has a wealth of knowledge about horticulture, soil health and all the sciencey stuff that ensures our soils are perfect. He aids us in our product development and customer queries, as well as helping out behind the scenes on our website.
Ben lives in Scotland, where he enjoys hiking and is part of his local mountain rescue team. He also spends his free time fishing and gardening!
Nick really does it all; his role involves managing staff, taking and processing orders, customer service, and health and safety. He is also our transport manager; he organises local and national deliveries and routes our lorries. Nick enjoys watching Spurs play, as well as spending time with his family and socialising with friends.
If you place an order with us over the phone, Mel is often that friendly voice on the other end of the line. She processes sales orders and invoices, and plays a key role in organising deliveries made by our partner pallet companies. Mel loves to see her children and grandchildren, and likes socialising with friends at the weekend.
Ellie manages our social media accounts, website pages, blogs, and our Compost Club email list (which you can join here). She also works with Chris on the run-up to events, by preparing the stands, designing t-shirts and creating leaflets. She also helps in the office by taking phone orders and creating invoices. Ellie enjoys art (so really appreciates the creative side of her job). She also likes to travel, cook and go to the gym.
Although new to the Field Compost team, if you are a lawncare trade customer, you will have spoken to Nicky by now. Nicky takes phone orders and organises our lawncare, GreenThumb, and Greensleeves orders and deliveries. Her other role is routing our curtainsider lorry, which delivers to customers nationwide. Nicky attends to her garden in her free time; she grows lots of flowers, fruit and vegetables. She also likes to bake and cook (using her own-grown veg in her meals).
Darron manages our yard team and the production of our bags; he works with Robin to mix our big bag orders. Darron is often seen with a tool in hand: repairing machinery or building us some new raised beds. Darron enjoys fishing, motorcycles, and walking his German shepherd.
Working with us since 2014, Robin’s role is to prepare and blend topsoil and compost for big bag and loose-load orders. These products are made to-order, so will be mixed, screened, bagged and loaded onto the lorry the day before delivery. A fan of painting, Robin is yet another artist at Field Compost. He also enjoys watching his team Derby County play football.
Mark blends our composts and mulches and is often seen turning our soils in the compound. He loads big bags onto our lorries and can sometimes be seen driving our tipper van – delivering small bags to local customers. Mark enjoys watching his local team play football, and playing darts with friends at the pub.
Keith oversees our bagging line for small bags; he mixes products and screens them (like screening our lawn dressing to 4mm), and operates our bag filler, sealer, stacker and pallet wrap. Keith enjoys swimming and gardening (I wonder where he gets his compost from?) and has a few flower beds in his garden. At the weekend he’s riding his motorbike, and watching Man City matches with Darron and Ash.
Like father like son, Ash operates our bagging line; he fills, seals, stacks, and wraps pallets of our small 25L, 40L and 80L bags. Ash likes to work out at the gym and ride his motorbike. He also supports Man City.
Adam can be spotted driving our yellow “banana” lorry around East Anglia, delivering our products to customers. He’ll return and load his lorry for his next run, or for the next day. Adam enjoys eating out and fixing cars. He supports Ipswich but prefers to watch motorcycle racing.
Andy first started with us as a van driver in 2019, but in January 2023 he was awarded his HGV license. Like Adam, he delivers our bags all around East Anglia and London. Andy enjoys spending time with his daughter, gaming (ironically, he enjoys playing a truck-simulator game), and watching boxing matches.
Until recently, Dan was one of our crane lorry drivers; he now drives our curtainsider lorry and operates its mounted forklift. This lorry is routed by Nicky and delivers to customers all over the country. Dan is an avid gamer and enjoys racing and strategy games and building computers.
